Brijesh Dalmia shares his thoughts on parameters that matter most to him when selecting funds for his clients and equity funds that he is comfortable recommending to his clients on this basis.

The basis on which I select funds (in order of preference ) are :

  • Consistent long term performance – Due to market cycles, good funds may underperform for a short period. I don’t worry about it.
  • Track record of the fund house – I give preference to older fund houses with a strong track record.
  • Minimum deviation by the fund manager from the theme of the fund. This is very important for me so that I spend less time in tracking the fund.

I am a strong believer that returns average out in the long term. In the short term, I do not possess the skill to outperform by fund selection or by taking sectoral calls.

I must admit that I have burnt my hands and lost money for my clients, in most cases when I have deviated from the above selection process.

My top picks

  1. HDFC Equity Fund
  2. Reliance Growth Fund
  3. SBI Contra
  4. Fidelity Equity
  5. DSP Tiger

New themes, new strategy by fund houses / managers do not excite me. I don’t prefer NFO’s. I would rather like to miss the bus than to take the wrong bus.

I believe “Dark Horse” theory may apply in case of stocks, but certainly not in case of mutual funds.
